What Ephesians 2:8-9 means

"For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God." Paul draws the sharpest possible line: salvation is a gift, not a wage. Grace is God's unearned favour, and faith is simply the open hand that receives it.

"Not of works, lest any man should boast." Because it cannot be earned, it cannot be bragged about — which frees the believer from both pride and the exhausting effort to be good enough. It is one of the clearest statements of the gospel of grace.
